The Bella Vista municipality is located deep in the Chiapas region of southern Mexico. Just across its southern border with Guatemala and as little as 100 miles west of the famed Guatemalan growing region of Huehuetenango, this is a small growing region with phenomenal conditions for excellent coffee. It is also the birthplace of Rosalba Cifuentes, the founder of Mayan Harvest.
Rosalba founded her organization (which has now grown to 70 producers, 50 of whom are women) to work with coffee producers in the area on improving harvesting and processing their coffee to get more competitive prices. Many of these producers have very little land, so these increased premiums make a significant difference in the producers’ livelihoods. Mayan Harvest also provides medical and dental assistance to its members as well.
The second year modcup has purchased Bella Vista Mayan Harvest through Royal Coffee and this year’s selection is equally as impressive as the first. It starts with a caramelized nutty aroma: almond butter, toasted pecan, honey-roasted peanuts.
The sweetness is striking on the first sip; honeycomb and brown sugar, giving way to leave behind orange zest and cacao notes that linger in the finish. It’s especially enjoyable as it cools, and much like last year, this selection makes a very nice single origin espresso in addition to a drip. However for us at modcup the full immersion method of a french press or an areopress is the brew method for this coffee.
This is a delicious option for those of you that have the sweet tooth. Rosalba and her “girl power” crew have brought us an amazing coffee yet again
